BACKSCATTER ATOM FLASH UNDERWATER STROBE REVIEW

Small Size, Big Power

The Backscatter Atom Flash Underwater Strobe AF-1 is a powerful yet compact lighting solution designed for professional underwater photography. Although it is small in size, it delivers an impressive f/28 guide number and a smooth 110° round beam. Consequently, it is capable of lighting everything from expansive wide-angle scenes to delicate macro subjects.

Key Features and Precision Lighting

In addition to its high output, this strobe offers several features for creative control. The 110° round beam provides even coverage, but you can further soften the glow with flat or dome diffusers. Furthermore, if you need precision for macro shots, you can snap on the OS-2 Optical Snoot. The built-in 1,000-lumen focus lights also make pinpoint lighting effortless.

Stay Informed with the Super Bright LCD

The Backscatter Atom Flash AF-1 features a high-visibility LCD that stays clear from sun-drenched reefs to pitch-black night dives. The display automatically rotates to match your strobe orientation, providing instant access to:

  • Mode & Power Level

  • Remaining Flash Count

  • Battery Life

The streamlined menu simplifies navigation, while customizable favorites put your go-to settings just one click away.

Powerful Flash That Travels Light

We designed the Backscatter Atom Flash AF-1 with travel in mind. Its low-profile body fits any underwater system, from compact cameras to full-frame rigs. The minimal footprint saves precious space in carry-on luggage and tight gear bags.

Whether you are a shore diver looking to lighten your load or a jet-setter heading to weight-restricted remote destinations, the AF-1 delivers professional lighting without the bulk. Downsize your gear, not your performance.

The Atom Flash has the same power as a Hybrid Flash set two clicks below maximum power, while being smaller and more than a half pound lighter.

Manual Mode for Direct Flash Control

With 11 power levels in ½ stop increments, each clearly displayed on the LCD screen, the Atom Flash has manual mode covered. The easy to reach dial adjusts flash power, while the output and remaining flash count are clearly displayed on the LCD screen.

The Atom Flash control dial has 11 different power levels, each clearly displayed on both the control dial and by the LCD info screen. In short, the Atom Flash goes to 11🤘!

Low Power Mode for Subtle Lighting

Darker, low-light scenes actually require less light than high-ambient ones, making overexposure a common struggle. To solve this, the Backscatter Atom Flash AF-1 features a Low Power Mode that unlocks 10 additional, ultra-fine flash outputs.

This mode gives you total control over delicate lighting scenarios, such as:

  • Sunset Split Shots: Balance the fading sun without blowing out the foreground.

  • Night Diving: Provide just a touch of illumination to maintain a natural look.

  • Macro Subjects: Avoid harsh highlights on reflective or translucent critters.

Dial in the perfect subtle glow and stop fighting overexposed frames.

Low Power Mode (LP) provides access to a lower range of flash outputs which is invaluable for lowlight scenes like this dark swim-through, which easily becomes blown out by brighter flash powers.

Easy Wireless Off Camera Power Level Remote Control

The Backscatter Atom Flash AF-1 simplifies off-camera lighting with its wireless transmit and receive functions. Forget swimming over to remote strobes to tweak settings—your camera-mounted AF-1, Hybrid Flash, or Mini Flash beams power adjustments to remote units with a single button press.

Why Go Wireless?

  • Zero Cables: The included Atom Flash Light Pipe optically receives signals, eliminating the need for bulky fiber optic cables.

  • Stay Stealthy: Adjust power levels from a distance to avoid spooking shy critters or kicking up silt.

  • Universal Compatibility: The AF-1 shares the same protocol as the Hybrid Flash and Mini Flash 2/3. Mix and match the entire Backscatter family on Remote Lighting Muck Sticks for creative backlighting and side lighting.

Remote lighting has never been this easy to deploy or this simple to control.

Over 600 Full Power Flashes per Charge

Using twin 18650 protected Lithium-Ion batteries, the Atom Flash will fire over 600 flashes on full power (GN28) or a full day of diving with thousands of cycles when shot at lower powers. This means more time shooting and fewer battery changes.

Powered by Two Protected 18650 Batteries

Using two protected 18650 batteries, the Atom Flash is able to keep up with the most stringent power demands. Currently, the only approved battery for the Atom Flash is the Xtar 18650 4000mAh battery. This battery meets the power demands of the Atom Flash and is loaded with safety features, such as built-in overcharge and overdischarge circuitry. Compatibility batteries can be purchased from Backscatter dealers or other outlets worldwide, making it easy to find spares and replacements.
